Lungs in a Box
There are currently 1700 people on the waiting list for a lung transplant. I followed the story of one patient on the waiting list and her decision to enroll in a clinical trial for a new device which allows donor lungs to stay warm and breathing, outside the body. This technology has the potential to save hundreds of lives each year since the current method of transporting donor organs—in coolers filled with ice—limits the geographic distance between the donor’s and recipient’s hospital. I was given behind-the-scenes access to the story as it unfolded—from the patient’s living room to the hospital operating room. It’s a story about the advent of lifesaving technology and the pioneering surgeons and patients who decide to take a chance on it
